Sensex Crashes 826 Points as Crude Oil Tops $115, US-Iran Tensions Rattle Markets

The Sensex plunged 826 points and the Nifty 50 fell over 200 points as Brent crude crossed $115 per barrel. US-Iran tensions, IT stock losses, profit booking and the Federal Reserve decision weighed on investor sentiment.

Indian stock markets came under heavy selling pressure on Wednesday, October 28, as rising crude oil prices, escalating US-Iran tensions and investor caution ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision weighed on market sentiment. The BSE Sensex plunged as much as 826 points, while the NSE Nifty 50 fell more than 200 points by 11 am.

Information technology (IT) stocks led the decline, with Infosys, Tech Mahindra and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) among the biggest drags on the benchmark indices. The Nifty IT index dropped 3.2 per cent, while the Nifty FMCG index declined 1.22 per cent. Broader markets showed a mixed trend, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 falling 0.16 per cent and the Nifty Midcap 100 trading 0.35 per cent higher.

Several factors contributed to the sell-off, including a sharp rise in crude oil prices, uncertainty surrounding the US-Iran conflict, profit booking after Tuesday’s derivatives expiry and expectations surrounding the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision.

Brent crude prices climbed above 5 per barrel on Wednesday amid concerns over potential supply disruptions in the Middle East. Reports of possible fresh military action against Iran added to the uncertainty, while tighter US crude inventories provided further support to oil prices.

Higher crude prices pose a particular concern for India, which imports a large share of its oil requirements. A prolonged increase in energy prices could raise the country’s import bill, put pressure on the rupee and fuel inflation. Businesses may also face higher transportation, manufacturing and operating costs, potentially squeezing profit margins and weakening investor sentiment.

Uncertainty over the conflict involving the United States and Iran has further unsettled global markets. Reports suggested that US President Donald Trump was considering a short, intense military campaign against Iran, although no final decision to launch a fresh campaign had been confirmed.

Diplomatic efforts to ease tensions are continuing, but a breakthrough remains elusive. Concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, have heightened fears of disruptions to energy supplies. Any escalation that keeps oil prices elevated could add to the pressure on India’s inflation outlook, currency and corporate earnings.

Investor caution has also increased following Tuesday’s derivatives expiry, with some traders opting to book profits rather than establish fresh positions. This has added another layer of pressure to an already unsettled trading session.

Meanwhile, market participants are awaiting the US Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision. The central bank is widely expected to leave its benchmark interest rate unchanged in the range of 3.75 per cent to 4 per cent. Investors will be looking for indications of the Fed’s future policy direction, particularly in the accompanying statement and comments from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh.

A hawkish message, indicating that interest rates could remain elevated for longer or rise further, may strengthen the US dollar and push bond yields higher. Such a development could reduce the appeal of equities and influence foreign investment flows into emerging markets, including India.

With crude oil prices above $115 per barrel, geopolitical uncertainty persisting and a key US monetary policy decision approaching, investors are monitoring developments across energy markets and global financial markets. The direction of oil prices, the trajectory of US-Iran tensions and signals from the Federal Reserve remain central to market sentiment.
